Portobello Road

Portobello road, Portobello road

Street where the riches of ages are stowed.

Anything and everything a chap can unload

Is sold of the barrow in Portobello road.

You find what you want in the Portobello road.

London took me back to old childhood memories. This song by the Sherman Brothers, is a song about Portobello Road in London, written for the Disney musical film Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

My day at Portobello Road Market

We went to see Notting Hill on a Saturday. Such a beautiful corner of London, made famous by Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. I’ve been to London many many times, but never actually visited Notting Hill with it’s famous Portobello Road and it’s beautiful market.

Portobello Road Market is the world’s largest antiques market with over 1,000 dealers. You should definitely go and see it on a Saturday since all stalls are open then. The dealers are selling anything from food, antiques, fashion, books and music. Street performers and super talented singers are waiting for you in every corner of the market. Sellers come together from all over the world, selling every kind of antique and collectible. The hustle and energy you feel along the streets is unbelievable.

To me, Portobello pointed out a different side of London. It’s the real side! I enjoyed every second of it.

Portobello market opens at 9am. You should definitely try to get there as early as possible to avoid the crowds in the afternoon. You can make some very good deals on silverware, antique glass, furniture and old china.

We were super lucky and found the perfect silver tray to go onto our bar cart at home (picture will follow) and an old video camera back from 1903.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find an old vintage Burberry trench coat that fitted me, but never mind. I will definitely be back again.

If you ever travel to London, make sure to visit beautiful Notting Hill and Portobello Market.
